Many people in this down economy doubt they can drive greater profits. Today’s call to action is to steer your organization to a more profitable position regardless of the economy. This is the time to be fearless, focused and take bold steps.
How to ride out the economy: 5 steps to improve winery performance thru leadership
  1. Act with audacity. Instead of reacting to the current environment, reflect on what’s happening and create your destiny. Great leaders do not maintain the status quo; they see opportunity and solutions - not barriers.
  2. Write action plans and commit to execute them. Written plans that are visible to all will help insure implementation. Include dates and the names of those responsible. Regularly review plans with your group. Appoint a person to take a leadership role and facilitate these reviews.
  3. Engage your team. Hold innovation sessions with employees. Identify novel ways to win in this current business situation and help shape the thinking of everyone in your winery. Encourage people to find better solutions with the same resources enabling your team to innovate. General Patton once said, “Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity”.
  4. Encourage constructive conflict. High performing leaders and teams freely discuss ideas with passion and without filters. Ask someone to play devil’s advocate during your discussions. If individuals are part of your planning process they will be more willing to wholeheartedly commit to actions even though their ideas may not have been the ones selected.
  5. Seek out a trusted business coach. It is easy to react too quickly during times of high emotion and uncertainty. Recovery from poorly made decisions is extremely costly. A good coach can help you develop your leadership assets, drive better decisions about the pragmatic needs of your business and capitalize on changes that result in more profitable futures. This is where my colleagues at Scion Advisors really can be useful. It may be as simple as a quick phone call to one of us. You can reach me at 707.257.9828.

Use this time to invest in your organization’s future. This will allow your business to emerge stronger than ever when the economy turns around, and with a meaningful advantage over competitors.
